Oil and natural gas deposits were formed from the remains of tiny animals and plantsthat lived 300-400 million years ago in marine environments. Over the years, the organic material was subjected to enormous heat and pressure from the weight of the mud and sand on top of them. This turned the organic material into crude oil and natural gas.
Coal formation began over 250 million years ago when the Earth was mostly covered in swamps. Giant tree ferns grew in these swamps, and whenvegetation died, it fell into the swamp water. The plant remains were transformed by bacteria into a material called peat. Over the years, the peat was compressed by mud and sand. Then, in a similar way to the oil and natural gas, the peat beds were first turned into lignite by the weight of the mud and sand above them, and finally hard coal was formed.
