Active and Passive Voice
A verb is in the active voice when the subject performs the action. A verb is in the passive voice when the action is performed on thesubject. Verbs in the passive voice consist of a form of be used as a helping verb followed by the past participle of the main verb. Passive voice is used when the writer wants to emphasize therecipient of the action. Passive voice is also used when the subject performing the action is unknown. However, you should choose the active voice whenever possible because it is more direct and lesswordy than passive voice.
Active voice: Marcovaldo followed the tabby.
Passive voice: The tabby was followed by Marcovaldo.
Active voice: The Red Death frightenedPrince Prospero.
Passive voice: Prince Prospero was frightened of the Red Death.
A. Practice: Identify each verb or verb phrase as active or passive by writing AV or PV on the linebefore each sentence.
Example: PV Prospero’s guests were given a safe place to stay.
