TECH: THE FUTURE OF SOLAR POWER
NEW PEROVSKITE SOLAR CELLS COULD PROVIDEAFFORDABLE SOLAR TECHNOLOGY

Since the late 20th century, people have been incorporating solar power into their lives in an attempt to free themselves from the grid and use green energy. However, oneof the major stumbling blocks for consumers has always been the cost of solar panels. In the future, perovskites may provide a more affordable option. This group of mineral compounds is capable ofcollecting solar energy as efficiently as silicon for a fraction of the cost.
A solar-hungry perovskite cocktail can be created in a laboratory and then poured onto a backing material, which isa muchsimpler process than slicing precise silicon wafers Solar scientist Varun Sivaram is excited by preliminary perovskite tests. “This is the field’s biggest breakthrough since the original invention of thesolar cell,” he exclaimed. Although laboratory tests have proven quite successful, scientists must still create a watertight design for consumer perovskite panels.
