The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue ofLiberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.It is located on Liberty Island south of the island of Manhattan,near the mouth of the Hudson River near Ellis Island. It measures about 46 meters high and weighs 225 tons. The torch is plated in gold. The statue is the work of French sculptor Frederic AugusteBartholdi and the inside structure was designed by engineer Gustave Eiffel.
