Abstract: This paper describes the innovation factory solution that consists of integrated software assets for accelerating innovation through the creation of ecosystems consisting of enterprises, partners, suppliers, and customers collaborating and cocreating new services. Innovation factory provides capabilities in three distinct areas: collaboration services, servicesmanagement, and IT resource management. Collaborative services include Web 2.0 tools such as wikis, blogs, and social networking and tagging tools for enabling and accelerating collaboration across globally and organizationally dispersed teams. Services management includes a service catalog used for cataloging, discovering, and managing globally distributed services. IT resource management capabilitiesinclude a multitenancy application environment for developing, incubating, and deploying applications in a globally distributed IT infrastructure. Executive summary
As global market opportunities, competition, and availabilityof people resources increase, enterprises are assigning high strategic priority to accelerating innovation. Enterprises want to accelerate innovation by collaborating and cocreating with partners and users. The desired outcome is improved time to market and increased value of more new products and services. The emergence of the Web as a platform, sometimes called Web 2.0, provides enterprises withnew models and tools for collaboration and cocreation. Collaboration can be enhanced with virtual communities that leverage social linking and tagging tools (MySpace, del.icio.us), user content sites (Wikipedia, Flickr), and sites that leverage opinions of all who participate (Google search, Amazon ratings). Enterprises already leveraging cocreation are eBay API and SalesForce.com AppExchange. These platforms provide enterprises an ecosystem of partners, suppliers, and customers collaborating to develop capabilities by integrating services. Enterprises want a solution that provides these capabilities out of the box. The IBM High Performance On Demand Solutions (HiPODS) team is developing what it calls the innovation factory solution to provide Web 2.0-type collaboration and IT managementcapabilities for creating and hosting services from incubation to production. The components of the innovation factory fall into these areas of capabilities:
• • • A collaborative grid environment that contains tools such as social networking and tagging, usercontent-driven sites such as blogs and wikis, and advanced search services A service grid environment that provides functions fordeveloping, cataloging, running, and maintaining services by leveraging the service oriented architecture (SOA) fabric of Webify Solutions and the MRO Software service catalog An infrastructure grid management service that is a multitenancy environment for managing multiple distributed IT infrastructures as one virtual pool of resources

• • • • •

Innovation factory has two deployment models. The firstallows large enterprises to host the solution to create an ecosystem for collaboration and cocreation of new services with their suppliers, partners, and customers. The second model is an equivalent service for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) that is hosted by a third party. In the SMB model, small businesses participate in an ecosystem of:
