Inrō

The Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) is home of some of the most creative products of art from differentcultures and countries. On Friday, I had the great opportunity to visit the MET for the first time, and the first impression I had was that the architecture of the building is majestic. Within the multitudeof people, I found myself admiring the beauty of this well-preserved museum and its exhibits. And soon after I entered the building, I headed to the Asian Galleries, where along with a coupleclassmates I met professor Fukuda, and so the adventure began.
I saw impressive works of art from China, Japan, Korea, and other parts of East and South Asia. But, out of all the artifacts, the ones thatcaught my attention the most are called Inrō. I was really impressed by their delicate designs and how their small size adds to the beauty they comprise. Besides, after having done some research, Ibecame even more impressed by how they are a living proof of the magnificence Japan reached during the Tokugawa period. Now, let’s explore more about it.

Description:
I saw two small containers nextto one another that seemed to be made of wood. These two little pieces were about the same height of a lighter but slightly wider. The small objects were shiny and dark-colored and had differentdesigns on them. One had the picture of a small flower with silver colored petals and the few leaves that surrounded it were of gold color. It also had a tiny cord on both endings that passed through thesides of the small container making some sort of knot at the bottom. On the top part, the cord was fastened with a diminutive green wooden-bead (ojime) and at the end of the cord another small pieceof wood (netsuke) was hanging on which the designs on it were hard to see. The other container had the picture of a Lily accompanied by many leaves and on top of one of the leaves, there was a bee....
