RELACIONES ENTRE LA INTELIGENCIA
EMOCIONAL Y EL COCIENTE INTELECTUAL
CON EL RENDIMIENTO ACADÉMICO EN
ESTUDIANTES UNIVERSITARIOS

RESUMEN
El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar las relaciones existentes entre diferentes
pruebas de inteligencia emocional con una medida tradicional de la inteligencia, y de ambas
variables con el rendimiento académico en una muestra de estudiantes universitarios de distintas
titulaciones. Los participantes fueron 250 estudiantes universitarios matriculados en diferentesestudios de tipo técnico y humanístico, de los cuales aproximadamente la mitad eran varones y
la otra mitad mujeres. Se aplicaron dos pruebas de inteligencia emocional, el TMMS-24 y la
prueba de Schutte et al. (1998), junto con una prueba de inteligencia general, el test de factor g
de Cattell & Cattell, nivel 3, tomándose distintos indicadores globales de rendimiento. Los
resultados pusieron demanifiesto la existencia de correlaciones, entre moderadas y altas, todas
ellas significativas, entre los diferentes aspectos de la inteligencia emocional evaluados. Por el
contrario, se observaron correlaciones prácticamente nulas, entre el cociente intelectual que
define la inteligencia psicométrica tradicional y los diferentes aspectos de la inteligencia
emocional evaluados en el estudio.Además, se encontraron correlaciones significativas entre la
inteligencia emocional y algunos indicadores del rendimiento académico, incluso cuando se
mantuvo constante el efecto del CI. Estos resultados parecen indicar la independencia de ambos
tipos de inteligencia, en línea con los resultados de otras investigaciones, así como un efecto
moderado, aunque significativo de la inteligenciaemocional sobre el rendimiento académico.

RELATIONS BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND INTELLECTUAL
QUOTIENT REGARDING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF UNIVERSITY
STUDENTS
ABSTRACT
The present work has as its main objective the analysis of existing relations between different
tests of emotional intelligence and atraditional measurement of intelligence, and between both
variables and the academic performance in a sample of university students from different
departments. The participants were 250 registered university students from different
departments of technical and humanistic studies, of which approximately half were men and the
other half women. Two tests of emotional intelligence were applied, theTMMS-24 and the
Schutte et al. (1998) test, along with a test of general intelligence, the g factor test of Cattell &
Cattell, third level, different global performance indicators being gathered. The results showed
the existence of correlations, between moderate and high, all of them significant ones, between
the different aspects of emotional intelligence that were evaluated. On the other hand,practically null correlations were observed, between the intellectual quotient that defines
traditional psychometrical intelligence and the different factors of emotional intelligence
evaluated in the study. In addition, significant correlations were found between emotional
intelligence and some indicators of academic performance, even when the effect of the IQ was
maintained constant. Theseresults seem to indicate the independence of the two kinds of
intelligence, in line with the results of other investigations, as well as a moderate, although
significant effect of emotional intelligence on the academic performance.
