“If there’s one thing in this world I despise, it’s losers.”- Arnold Schwarzenegger

The movie Little Miss Sunshine tells the story of a troubled family that starts a 800-mile trip to California to attend to the little miss sunshine beauty contest to which the younger daughter has been accepted to compete. The main theme is what is actually to bea loser or a winner, and how being a loser is not to not make something happen but not to try to make it happen. Parallel to this comedy you can find the inner satyr where the director criticizes and mocks the American Dream, shows primary and secondary socialization (family, mass media) and completes the script with a lot of topics like love, support, being losers/winners, values, what means tobe part of a family and what is really to be good or bad.
At the start of the movie you see a presentation of all the characters and when they reunite they eat fast food. One could say Americans invented fast food, and to show this you get to see that succulent fried chicken in the middle of the dinner table. Other prejudice is that Americans are superficial. The pageant appears as a very big andimportant event for lots of American families, and the girls taking part of it are dressed like grown up woman, you can notice that there is something out of place because this girls are not grown ups but children not using their childhood to act like children should do, they haven’t even reached puberty and already worrying about make-up, tannings or if they are thin or not. Here is where thegrandfather’s criteria fails. He gives Olive a role, gender role, she can’t really accomplish, the one of dancing a burlesque act made to excite man. He thinks all women should behave like this and this will probably let Olive confused.
The policeman is shown as a responsible worker with wrong ideas and rejection to gays. The scene is were the van is pulled over because the claxon is disturbing thehighway, the policeman checks the trunk of the car and only poses his eyes in the porn magazines that belonged to the dead father covered in white sheets. The police starts a conversation about this porn magazines but in the moment he sees one of gay porn decides to leave the family alone. This part of the movie not only shows how important is for men to seem “macho” in front of each other butalso how this feeling can blind some people to the point of not realizing what happens in front of their eyes, like for example the dead body, without missing the strong rejection face the man makes when he finds the gay magazines.

The main characters are the family members: the wife/mother, the mother’s brother, the husband/father, the father father/the grandpa, the son and the daughter.Olive, the daughter, is a girl that was accepted in a beauty contest held in Redondo Beach, California. When she hears in the phone the big news she practically gets crazy and starts to scream all over the house and starts packing for the trip. When the moment to get on the stage arrives she’s doubtful for a few seconds but then decides to go and dance the choreography her grandfather prepared for her,a striptease with Rick James song “Super Freak”. She doesn’t win for her lack of talent and knowledge but is glad she had the chance to dance and very happy her family joined her on the stage. Secondary socialisation is shown the most, the mass media is easily to observe and is when at the beginning Olive is watching a video of Miss Universe winning and she is imitating the movements the winnerdoes as she acts surprised when announced winner. The girl strongly believes she has the talent to be like Miss Universe and is in risk to be severely harmed if she finds out that this statement is not true. Another important part when secondary socialisation is shown is the ice cream scene. Olive orders an ice cream and the father implies that she will never be like Miss Universe because eating...
