This is an important risk factor for the health of the general population. This review evaluates the contaminants that are present in the air of indoor air spaces, describing the sources that generate them as well as the physiopathologicalmechanisms and the diseases that they may cause in the respiratory system.

La contaminación del aire es actualmente uno de los problemas ambientales más severos a nivel mundial. Está presente en todas las sociedades, independientemente del nivel de desarrollo socioeconómico, y constituye un fenómeno que tiene particular incidenciasobre la salud del hombre. El presente artículo de revisión define esta contaminación, sus principales fuentes, los agentes contaminantes y la importancia de los sistemas de vigilancia de la calidad del aire. Enfatiza en la contaminación de ambientes exteriores y expone una síntesis de la manifestación histórica de este problema, que incluye la referencia de convenciones y eventosinternacionales. También aborda su repercusión como problema de salud, a través de ejemplos en distintos países de América.
