Summery
An old man, who has been a fisherman all his life and enjoys being one, has not caught anything for a long time. He has only one friend, a boy who loves him dearly and who prevents the oldman from starving by bringing him food. One day the boy urges the old man to go far out in the sea to see if he can catch anything there. The old man agrees and sets out. When he gets there and throwsin his line he suddenly gets a bite, and it is not an ordinary fish that is on the hook because instead of the old man pulling the fish in, the fish pulls him and his boat. But the old man does notgive up and does not cut the line. Instead, he decides to give a battle to the monster fish. Days pass and the fish is still pulling the boat and the old man wishes he has the boy with him to help him.He is hungry, exhausted and bleeding but even at this point he does not surrender because he thinks it is a fisherman’s duty to catch every fish that gets on his hook. The old man now puts his lifein the hands of the fish, the sea and god.  As his hunger grows he decides to try multitasking by putting another line in. In a few hours he catches a couple of fish, strips their skin with his knifeand eats them raw. Even though they are disgusting they give him energy. The fish continues to pull and the old man feels his energy is getting sapped out of him. Right when he feels he cannot hold onany longer the fish starts circling and then jumps out of the water (both are indications that it can’t pull anymore). When the old man sees it jump out he realizes how big it is, even bigger than hisboat. This is the final moment of the battle: if the old man can kill it with one harpoon throw or not. The old man takes his harpoon and as the fish jumps out again he throws it with all theremaining strength right at the monstrous body. The fish wriggles for a second and then stops. It is dead. The battle is won and the old man offers many thanks to god. But there is now a second battle, and...
