This article is about the modern culture of Ireland and the Irish people. It includes customs and traditions, language, music, art, literature, folklore, cuisine and sport associated with Ireland andIrish people today. However, the culture of the people living in Ireland is not homogeneous. There are notable cultural divides between urban Irish and rural Irish, between Catholics andProtestants,between Irish-speakers in the Gaeltacht andEnglish-speakers, between immigrants and the native population, and between travellers and the settled population. For an overview of Ireland's culture duringthe Gaelic period, see Gaelic Ireland.
Although most Irish people are of Celtic descent, today Ireland is an ethnically diverse country as a result of large-scale immigration from many differentcountries throughout its history. Also, due to immigration of the Irish people themselves overseas, Irish culture has a global reach and Irish festivals such as St. Patrick's Day and Halloween[1] areobserved and celebrated all over the world.

Food in early Ireland

Farming and rural tradition

Traditional Irish cottages in County Antrim
As archaeological evidence from sites such as the CéideFields in County Mayo and Lough Gur in County Limerick demonstrates, farming in Ireland is an activity that goes back to the very beginnings of human settlement. In historic times, texts such as the TáinBó Cúailingeshow a society in which cattle represented a primary source of wealth and status. Little of this had changed by the time of the Norman invasion of Ireland in the 12th century. GiraldusCambrensis portrayed a Gaelic society in which cattle farming and transhumance was the norm.
