ISRAEL
Israel (Hebrew: יִשְרָאֵל, Yisra'el, Arabic إسرائيل 'Israil), officially State of Israel (מְדִינַת יִשְרָאֵל, Medinat Yisra'el, Arabic دولة إسرائيل, Dawlat Israil) is a country in the Middle East that is in the southeasternshore of the Mediterranean. Bounded on the north by Lebanon, east by Syria, Jordan, West Bank, the west by the Mediterranean Sea and the Gaza Strip with Egypt southwest and south by the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea. With a population of about 7.6 million people, most of whom are Jews, Israel is the world's only Jewish state. It is also home to Arab Muslims, Christians, Druze and Samaritans as well asother religious and ethnic minority groups. The capital, seat of government and largest city is Jerusalem, the main economic and financial center is located in Tel Aviv and the largest industrial center located in Haifa.
Capital: Tel Aviv
The modern state of Israel identifies its roots in the ancient Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael), a concept central to Judaism for over 3,000 years. After theFirst World War, the League of Nations approved the British Mandate of Palestine with the intention of creating a "national home for the Jewish people. In 1947, the United Nations approved the partition of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. On May 14, 1948 the State of Israel declared its independence, which was followed by the Arab-Israeli War 1948 Arab neighbors, who refused toaccept the UN plan. Successive victories in a series of wars after independence confirmed and extended the borders of the Jewish state beyond the provisions of the Partition Plan of the United Nations. Since then, Israel has been in conflict with many neighboring Arab countries, with several wars and decades of violence that continue to this day. Since its founding, the borders of Israel and eventhe right to exist of the state itself has been subject to controversy, especially among its Arab neighbors. However, Israel has signed peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, and efforts are being made to reach a permanent agreement with the Palestinian Authority.
Israel is a representative democracy with a parliamentary system and universal suffrage. The Prime Minister acts as head of governmentand the Knesset as Israel's legislative body. In terms of GDP, its economy ranks 43 according to the International Monetary Fund. In turn, Israel is highly placed among the Middle Eastern countries in human development, freedom of expression, and economic competitiveness.
