THE HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World , and were built in the sixth century. C. during the reign ofNabucodonozor II in the city of Babylon (the Babel of biblical texts), the river Euphrates .
By 600 A. BC, Nabucodonozor II, king of the Chaldeans , wanted to make his wife Amytis , daughter of the king ofthe Medes , a gift to prove his love for her and remember the beautiful mountains of florida land, so different from the Great Plains Babylon.
According to a legend, however, the gardens have been builtin the eleventh century. C. But then reigned in Babylon Shammuramat called Semiramis by the Greeks, as regent for her son Adadnirari III. It was a brave queen who conquered India and Egypt. But notresist her son conspired to defeat it, and ended up committing suicide. It belongs to ancient Mesopotamia and is part of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
The decline of the gardens
With thepossible fall of Babylon and the end of the Neo-Babylonian Empire , the gardens were gradually abandoned. When Alexander the Great came to the city in the fourth century BC, the gardens were alreadypartially ruined and totally abandoned. Finally the gardens were destroyed by King Euhemerus in 125 BC.
Features
The gardens were located next to the King's palace, just next to the river, so thatthe travelers could see and that access was prohibited to people . From the highest of the terraces stood a reservoir of water from which ran several streams.
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon not "hung"really in the sense of being suspended by cables or cords. The name comes from a mistranslation of the Greek word kremastos or Latin term pensilis, which means not just "hanging" but "excel", as inthe case of a terrace or balcony.
