An archaeologist is someone who studies people and what they did in the past from the things they left behind.
They look for what people left on in the past artifacts that were made by them, to study and see the reason of why those artifacts and objects were made and their functions, such as beads or coins that Native Americans did.
They also look for features, a feature iswhen someone digs into the ground and finds some evidence of an activity. Archaeologists call the place where they find artifacts in the ground a site.
Archaeologists use a lot of tools for their job, such as maps and compasses to locate the site. Then he uses picks and shovels to dig, and buckets to carry the dirt to a screen.
They always record where everything is located by making maps anddrawings of everywhere they dig their artifacts. This information helps them interpret what happened at that place where they were founded.
It’s very important for them to dig very carefully so they don’t miss anything important, they do it in a way that only they know how to, it’s one of the most important things in archeology.
The purpose of this is to learn the development of the humans, 99%of the history of humanity has occurred within prehistoric cultures, which did not make use of writing, not leaving written records about themselves that we can study today.
Basic example:
Have you ever found a penny on the ground? That is an artifact that was lost by someone. Years from now, that penny could be found by an archaeologist, and it would be studied as part of American culture inthe early twenty-first century, and they would know that penny was used in our years, our culture would be based in that coin.
Archaeology is not about looking for buried treasure and archaeologists never, get to keep what they find, but instead give their artifacts and findings to museums.
Archaeologists are interested in learning about how people lived in the past, or what items were valued, orif certain people were perhaps more influential by, but oftentimes archaeologists are more interested in how and where the people lived, their conditions etc.
Archaeologists do not spend all of their time digging, first they spend time researching the area they will be digging carefully, after the excavation, and all of the recovered material must be washed, and then studied. The final and mostimportant step of any dig is for archaeologists to write about what they found and learned about the artifact or the objects that were founded.
So, even though digging takes a lot of time and effort, even more time is spent in the library or in the lab or in front of the computer to analyze their artifacts.
Artifacts are usually found buried in the ground really down there in a long period oftime, soil builds up and covers things left on the ground. That is why archaeologists dig in the dirt, or excavate, to find the artifacts. Any place where human activity occurred and where artifacts are found is called an archaeological site. And there are two types of archaeological sites, prehistoric and historic.
Prehistoric one are the ones used for a daily life such as pipes, plates, ceramics made by native Americans etc. archeologist need to find out what these objects were guessing until they knew what it was. Because of it, they sometimes make incorrect in to finding what it was or guesses.
Historic ones are those created by societies with written records. Some examples of historic documents include ships, log books, inventories, diaries, maps, and some photographs.
Why isit so important?
I thought of an example, long time ago our teacher told us that we were going to do a show and tell, this was one of the games that I loved most, it was about bringing something that you loved or something meaningful like your favorite toy or a thing you had from a family vacation, I know this is objects are important for you because they help you remember of your past, sharing...
