John Lennon
Born and raised in Liverpool, where as a teenager he became familiar with the skiffle craze, forming the band The Quarrymen, which later became The Beatles in 1960. As thegroup began to disintegrate until its dissolution at the end of that decade, Lennon launched a solo career.
Around 10:50 pm on December 8, 1980, shortly after Lennon and Ono return to theDakota, the apartment where they lived in New York, Mark David Chapman, who was waiting in the lobby gathered replacement goalkeeper Jose Perdomo Sanjenis , shot Lennon in the back five times atthe entrance to the building (Sanjenis Perdomo was who accused him and the only witness to the event). Early in the afternoon, he had autographed a copy of Double Fantasy album to Chapman.99 wastaken to the emergency room of nearby Roosevelt Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:20 pm.
The next day, Ono issued a statement, saying: "There is no funeral for John". Onoconcluded his statement with the words, "John loved and prayed for the human race. Please pray for the same. " His body was cremated at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. Ono scatteredhis ashes in Central Park, New York, where he later established the Strawberry Fields memorial. Chapman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, currently still injail, after having been repeatedly denied parole.
