The Great Wall of China or long fort is one of the oldest buildings of humanity. Theemperor Shih Huang Ti built a wall to contain the enemies of China in 221 BC. TheWalls, the world'slongest, is about 8851.8 km long.

The Great Wall of China is 7 feet high and 7 feet thick at its base, tapering to athickness of 4.5 meters at the top. The wall needed millions of men andcenturies in itsconstruction. The workers used earth, brick and stone, and even opened a way into thetop. The wall has watchtowers 9 to 12 feet high placed at some distance from eachother. The Great Wall of China runsthrough mountains, valleys and deserts.

There is a well known myth that says the Great Wall of China is the only manmadestructure that can be seen with the naked eye fromspace. While the wall has thousandsof kilometers long, is demasiaga narrow as to be viewed from outer space.

The wall was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. Much of the GreatWall is reputed to be the largest cemetery inthe world. Approximately 10 million workers died during construction. They were not buried in the wall itself, but nearby.
