What a Man
Most people say that courage as simply someone being “brave”. According to most dictionaries would define it as a quality of spirit that enables you to face danger of pain withoutshowing fear. The people and dictionaries are not wrong, but this person gains a new level beyond courage. Eugenio Maria de Hostos did amazing things, things that a normal person would be to afraid todo. I’m amazed of how much his heart was in the achievement of his goal that he did stop fighting for it, no matter what obstacle was in his way.
Let’s start the “right” way to use the term“courage” in Hostos’s life. When he was 13 years old, he was sent to study his high school years in the Institute of Bilbao, in Madrid, Spain. Wow! such, such courage, at such a young age, alone in anothercountry studying!. Most kids would not be able to do that, I personally would be too afraid to do it, even if I wanted to. But he did it, that reason alone anyone would be called “brave” and a personfilled with “courage”, but that it’s only the beginning for Hostos. The real fun starts after he quits his law studies to pursue his goal-in-life, Puerto Rico’s independence, What a goal! Nobody,nobody’s goal was that big, that difficult, sounded impossible for everyone, except him. What a man!
When he began writing his first article in the newspaper “The Progress”, demanding Spain for aliberal propaganda. The government closed it, because they were selfish. After that he went to New York and joined a group of revolutionaries who were fighting for the autonomy and liberty of theAntilles. There were just no stopping Hostos huh? That was the beginning of his search for people who would helped him reach his goal. What’s the crazy part in all of this? He went to almost all thecountries in America and fought a different battle in each of them. Wow! He was willing to go to places he’s never been, with his goal in mind and heart, unafraid of the consequences. If that’s not...
