Communication studies

Communication studies in an academic field that deals with processes of human communication, commonly defined as the sharing of symbols to create meaning. The discipline encompasses a range of tops, from face-to-face conversation to mass media outlets such as television broadcasting. Communication studies also examines how messages are interpreted through the political,cultural, economic and social dimensions of their contexts.

Communication studies integrates aspects of both social sciences and the humanities. As a social science, the discipline often overlaps with sociology, psychology, anthropology, biology, political science, economics, and public policy, among others. From a humanities perspective, communication is concerned with rhetoric and persuasion.The field applies to outside disciplines as well, including engineering, architecture, mathematics, and information science.

In the United States, the National Communication Association (NCA) recognizes nine distinct but often overlapping sub-disciplines within the broader communication discipline: technology, critical-cultural, health, intercultural, interpersonal-small group, masscommunication, organizational, political, and rhetorical. Other programs and courses often integrated in communication programs include journalism, film criticism, theatre, public relations, political science, as well as radio, television and film production. More recently, computer-mediated communication and the implications of new media for communication have drawn new research and courses.

Graduates offormal communication programs take many different career paths, including university professors, marketing researchers, media editors and designers, journalists, actors, human resources managers, corporate trainers, public relations practitioners and media managers and consultants in a variety of jobs.

Journalism

Journalism is the practice of investigation and reporting of events, issuesand trends to a broad audience in a timely fashion. Though there are many variations of journalism, the ideal is to inform the intended audience. Along with covering organizations and institutions such as government and business, journalism also covers cultural aspects of society such as arts and entertainment. In modern society, newsmedia have become the chief purveyor of information and opinion about public affairs; but the role and status of journalism, along with other forms of mass media, are undergoing changes resulting from the Internet. The use of information graphics and time management techniques are revolutionizing the newsroom through the use of the maestro concept.

Mass media: Refers collectively to all mediatechnologies that are intended to reach a large audience via mass communication. Broadcast media transmit their information electronically and comprise of television, film and radio, movies, CDs, DVDs and some other gadgets like cameras or video consoles. Alternatively, print media uses a physical object as a means of sending their information, such as a newspaper, magazine, brochures, newsletters,books, leaflets and pamphlets. Photography can also be included under this subheading as it is a medium which communicates through visual representations. Mobile phones, computers and Internet are sometimes referred to as New-age Media. Internet media is able to achieve mass media status in its own right, due to the many mass media services it provides, such as email, websites, blogging, etc.Maestro Concept: is a time-management technique in journalism designed to assist a newsroom in creating a project-based, teamwork-intensive approach to quality reporting of news and stories by "Thinking Like a Reader."
