He is the son of Julia Moreno and Salvador Hernandez, Mexican immigrants. His father, Salvador, is a native of La Piedad, Michoacan, and came to this country 49 years ago to workin the agricultural fields of California. He studied electrical engineering at the University of the Pacific, later became a master of science degree in electrical engineering at the University ofCalifornia at Santa Barbara. He was selected by NASA in Group 19, 2004 for space activities. As one of the four children of a migrant family from rural Mexico was forced to work at work picking fruit andvegetables in California. In 2006 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of the Pacific. [1]
His motivation for being an astronaut was when he was collecting vegetables in Stockton,California and listened to his transistor radio that the Costa Rican Latin American origin Franklin Chang-Diaz had been selected for the astronaut program at NASA and be the first Latino to thespace. Their collaboration in the Livermore National Laboratory in the early 1990s contributed to a new tool for early detection of breast cancer.
The NASA engineer remembers exactly how it happened: Iwas cleaning a row hoeing sugar beet crop in a field near Stockton, California and heard on the transistor radio that Franklin Chang-Diaz was selected as an astronaut, says Hernández , who was acollege student at the time. He cites: Remembering the Spanish-American selection of Franklin Chang-Diaz: That's when I said 'I want to travel into space', since then, is something I have struggled everyday to do so. [2]
As one of the four children of a family of migrant Mexican farm, Hernandez did not learn English until he was 12 years old. He spent most of his childhood in what he calls theCalifornia Circuit traveling with his family from Mexico to southern California each March and working in the Stockton area until November, picking strawberries and cucumbers at farms along the route....
