The Film “The Armenian Genocide” is a documentary that explores the killings of more than 1 million Armenians perpetuated by the Ottoman Empire (what is now Turkey) at the beginning of the 20thcentury. It depicts the techniques utilized to carry out such despicable act, as well as events that are considered not entirely responsible but played a big role in the Armenian genocide, and the currentdenial of responsibility from the Turkish nation in these events.
It seems that orchestration of genocide starts from a relatively irrational fear and hate from one group of people towards another;in most cases if not all of them, the group in possession of that irrational fear and hate is characterized by being the majority--ethnically speaking--and the hated group is the minority. Anotherbasis of genocide is the ambition of territorial expansion of a specific set group of people who considerers a minority an obstacle for such endeavors. Another remarkable set of preconditions that playan enormous role in genocide are racism, social stereotype and common prejudice.
“The Armenian Genocide” clearly supports this theory by exploring the preceding events that led to the mass massacre ofhundreds of thousand Armenians in the midst of WWI. Going back to the 15th century when Muslims took over the region what years later would be the Ottoman Empire, Armenians who had converted toChristianity were considered inferior. They had fewer rights than Muslims, consequently not being able posses any important role in this new regime.
At the dawn of the 19th century the Ottoman Empireadopting German imperialistic ideologies started to see Armenians as an obstacle for its expansion. And just like Germans who hated the Jews for being an obstacle for their ideologies among other things,the Turks began to build the idea that in order to move “forward” they had to get rid of the weaker link.
In my opinion and hopefully the same of the rest of the world genocides like the one...
