UNIT 1: The Judaism
* What are the origins of Judaism? Judaism is a religious tradition with origins dating back nearly four thousand years, rooted in the ancient near eastern region of Canaan * What do Jews believe? The Jews believe there is only One God. Often this God is beyond our ability to comprehend, but God is nevertheless present in our everyday lives. What are the basicbeliefs of Judaism? The Jewish belief is to love Hashem (God) with all your heart, soul and resources
* What does the term “Chosen people” mean? According to Jewish belief, Jews are the “ChosenPeople” because they were chosen to make the idea of one God known to the world.
* What is a Rabbi? The rabbi is a Torah scholar who guides the members of the Jewish community he serves.
* What is aSynagogue? A synagogue is a religious structure that can be identified with the Jewish faith. The earliest synagogues probably developed during the period of Babylonian exile perhaps as early as 6thcentury BC.
* What is the Torah? The Torah is Judaism’s most important text. It is composed of the Five Books of Moses and also contains the 613 commandments and the Ten Commandments. The Word“Torah” means “to teach.”
* What does Sabbath means? The Sabbath day was made for mankind as a special time set apart by God Himself for holy purposes. A day in which we delight ourselves in our Creatorand Redeemer, to honor Him. That is what the scriptures above tell us. Yet in modern times the day God asked us to remember and keep holy, mankind has told us to forget, and to call it just anothercommon day.
* What is the Kippah? A kippah is a head covering that observant Jewish males wear to show respect for God.
