IMMANUEL KANT
AN ANSWER TO THE QUESTION:
WHAT IS ENLIGHTENMENT? (1784)
SUMMARY
The text begins by saying that enlightenment is the man out his minority, so is the path to understanding yourself without the help of anyone who makes a guide. Have courage to use your own understanding! Is the motto of the Enlightenment.
Sometimes some men prefer to live in ignorance led by others who act astheir guardians. Guardians take over to scare us with all the dangers that lurk us when we take the step towards a possible majority. Guardians are also involved stun minors, as pets, causing in them the feeling of being unable to walk without a walker you have been locked.
Kant says that although it is difficult to leave the minority, continually arise men who think for themselves. Are the truerepresentatives of the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment is guided by freedom, but in the society in which we live, freedom has many limitations.
The public use of reason must always be free and make it can only achieve enlightenment among men. Private use of the same must be limited too often, without impeding the progress of the Enlightenment in particular.
However, if a state matter in which youhave been engaged in a passive way, and this can lead to the destruction of some public goals, is prohibited reason, we can only obey.
A citizen can not object to the tasks that have been imposed as a review of them when they should be executed by him would be punished. But he does not act in contempt, exposing his public his disagreement about the ordinances commanded. As citizens we must obeyour tasks but as intellectuals we have every right to expose our complaints and improvements as a solution to our disagreement.
The use that a priest makes of his reason before his congregation may be purely private. In this context, it is not free because it exposes something alien, as is the official doctrine of the Church. Now, as a scholar, a priest in the public use of reason, would enjoyunlimited freedom. So Kant says: pretend guardians of the people (in spiritual matters) are minors again is nonsense flowing into eternity of ignorance.
According to Kant, the Church can not ban the public use of reason, because this attitude would end with all the possibility of Illustration for Human Race. The society of an epoch cannot limit the freedom of the public use of reason, thuspreventing advance in the progress and expand knowledge. In this context, Kant asks whether a society could be imposed on itself a law limiting the use of freedom in the public use of reason. Kant's answer is clear: Only this would be acceptable if the new law will free all citizens, especially the priests, so that they, as learned, could make free use of his reason. Although this law would be temporaryand should never be altered as it would mean violating the sacred rights of mankind.
Neither the monarch can decide about the beliefs of his people. The real monarch, for Kant, is one in which its legislative authority rests in the will that brings all the people to their own. In this context, the monarch has to allow his subjects to act for themselves in what they consider necessary for thesalvation of his soul. For Kant the government of Frederick II, combining absolute freedom of thought in religious matters and a rigid social order was the best path to Enlightenment.
Kant hopes that the mere freedom of thought can transform men so that there will come a day to don´t be treated as machines or subjects but citizens under the dignity that gives them freedom.
