“Swing Time”
Problem: Does the swing of a pendulum take longer for an object of greater mass?
Hypothesis: The swing time is affect if it has more mass, it takes more time.Objective: Determinate is the swing of a pendulum take longer for an object of greater mass.
Materials:
* Stand with clamp
* Large paper clip
* Ruler
* String 40 cm inlength
* Stopwatch
* 5 metal washers
Procedure
1. Write a hypothesis describing how the mass of a washer attached to a pendulum.
2. Tie one end of a string to aclamp on a stand. Tie the other end to a large paper of clip. Pull out one side of the paper clip to serve as a hook.
3. Place a metal washer on the hook, and let it hang down. Ifnecessary, raise the clamp so that the washer swings freely.
4. Pull the washer back so that the string makes an angle of about 45º with the stand. Record this height as thestarting position of the washer.
5. Release the washer gently, without pushing it. During a complete swing, the washer will move from its starting position and back again.
6.Record the time for 10 swings to the nearest tenth of a second. Then divide the time by 10 to find the average time for one swing.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6, increasing the masseach time by adding a washer. Make sure you always star the swing at the same height.
Data table
Number of Washers | Time for 10 swings (s) | Average Time per swing (s) |
1 | 12| 1.2 |
2 | 12.62 | 1.262 |
3 | 12.85 | 1.285 |
4 | 13 | 1.3 |
5 | 13.69 | 1.369 |

Interpreting Data

Observations: Not all the metals washers have the same size.Conclusion: If the swing has more mass it affects the time.
Communicating: This experiment helped me to the hypothesis because I saw that if I put more washers the speed increased.
