Chapter 2

Zeus, the King of gods, fell in love with Danae, and he wanted to free her from her bronze prison, so he decided to give her a son.
One day, Danae was sitting in her chair with her eyesclosed and her face held up to the sun. Suddenly, it felt as if thousands of pieces of something small and cool were falling all over her like rain. They were pieces of gold which Zeus had turnedhimself into, and by touching her, he was able to give her a son.
Danae knew by the magical feel of what had happened that it was Zeus who had come to visit her. She knew he was the child's father, andthe boy became so important to her that she forgot about the man her father said was corning to see her. Neither did she mind staying in the bronze house now that she had a son to look after. Shecalled him Perseus and she thought he would one day be a great man.
When the King saw what had happened, he was very angry.
"Who is the father of this child? How did he get in here?"
"His father isZeus, King of the gods, and I shall see that he lives like one."
"No, that cannot be, you are lying! The Great Zeus surely knows that your evil child was born to kill me; he could not have done this!""But, Father, it is true! Zeus is the child's father!"
"I kept you here so you'd never have the evil child that you've had. 111 íind a way to kill yon both."
King Acrisius leít Danae and her childalone so he could think of a plan to kill her. Danae was frightened to think how much her father disliked her and her son, but when she looked into her son's smiling eyes she said,
"You will help mekeep us alive."

Fisherman and his Wife
King Acrisius was siill afraid that the gods would punish hiin if he killed Danae and Perseus himself, so he found a way to make sure they would die on theirown. He liad a large cofhn inade, which they were hoth put into, and it was thrown into the sea. Before he closed them inside, King Acrisius spoke lo his daughter.
