-each home is 15m x 15m square
-the house itself occupies itself in an L-shape on two sides of the square
-remaining surface is awalled-off private courtyard
PLAN
-63 houses organized on an undulating landscape complete with a pond
-each house is designed so that walls facing the courtyard are glazed with sloping tile roofstilted from the exterior into the interior
-a string of houses, connected and continuous, follows the contours of the site carefully
-two clusters are arranged in the southern part of the sitewith the landscape in mind
SITE PLAN
-operable windows allow for natural ventilation and air circulates fast considering the size of each
house
-very few openings on the exterior wall of eachunit, air cannot flow through naturally from one side to
the other
-large walls surrounding courtyard act like windbreakers, disrupting the flow of wind and natural
ventilation
VENTILATIONSummer
Winter
-each unit is oriented so that their glazed side
faces the sun
-sunlight is sufficiently blocked out during the
summer by the overhang created by the roof,
while allowing sunlight induring winter
LIGHTING
-roof overhang is the primary means of shading in each unit
-the northern units are higher up in elevation than the southern units
SHADING
-trees were implementedto provide another means of shading
-Utzon’s early design sketches placed trees in specific areas around each unit
VEGETATION
-fully blossomed trees to block out sunlight in the summer, whilethe leafless trees of
winter, let sunlight through
VEGETATION
-on a bus route allowing for public transportation
