COURSE TITLE : Maternal and Child Nursing II

COURSE NUMBER : ENFE 4002

CREDIT-HOURS : Six credit hours. Two hours of lecture and two, six hour’s laboratories per week.

PRE/CO-REQUISITES

Pre-requisites course : ENFE4001

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Theory and clinical experience in Maternal and Child care following a family-centered approach.

COURSE GOALS:

1. Relate concepts, historical, legal and ethical issues and dilemmas in the evolution of nursing of children.

2. Distinguish the normal growth and developmental needs of infancy to adolescence and how family, community and nursing system fulfillthem.

3. Utilize theories, concepts, and facts from the biological and psychosocial sciences in the ministering of care to the growing child.

4. Interact with the family of the growing child for teaching wellness behaviors for the promotion and maintenance of high-level of wellness.

5. Utilize the nursing process as a systematic method to assess, plan, intervene, and evaluate the care forthe growing child during health and illness.

6. Provide nursing interventions to the child during health and illness.

7. Distinguish roles and functions in the nursing care of the growing child.

8. Recognize the value of the applicability of research findings in the nursing of children practice.

9. Utilize the critical thinking process whileproviding nursing care to the child during health and illness.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:

 CLASSROOM:

a. Classroom teaching addresses the knowledge content of the growth and developing process in the child and the community resources available to the child.

b. Student learning activities are provided, some on an individual basis or group projects. Activities are designed to promote the developmentof problem solving skills through critical thinking exercise. Through oral and written presentation of group projects the communication skills are strengthened.
c. A wide variety of teaching strategies are used such as lectures, group discussion, and demonstration, among others.

 CLINICAL LABORATORIES:

Demonstration, pre and post conferences and clinical practice provides thestudent the opportunity for therapeutic nursing intervention to the childbearing family. The students will interview the child and family, take health history, and perform physical assessment and health education at Clinics, community and other appropriate scenarios.
