La Carreta

Having been born in Puerto Rico (PR), my primary language is Spanish. Since Spanish derives mainly from Latin it is easier for me to understand scientific terms, because mostof these derive from Latin as well. My culture has emerged essentially from three different others: Spaniard, African and Taína. The fusion of different cultures results inan enriched society. Since PR was discovered in 1493, we have spoken two languages: Spanish and English, before that we spoke the native language, which still a few speak.Additionally, education here teaches the same classes taught in the United States (in Spanish). I study in a specialized school of visual arts; there I take the regular classes,Fashion Design and this year AP Math.

Puerto Rico has given birth to inspiring people, such as Ricardo Alegría, who represents the awareness of Puerto Ricanculture, education and history. Another illustrious personage is Yajaira Sierra; this nanotechnologist has been chosen to participate in a NASA investigation. Just like them,with whom I share the same ethnic background, I pursue to have passion for erudition and society’s welfare. Looking up to our heroes I do my best to develop academically, forI understand that in knowledge we find the capacity to make an impact in our world, like they did or are doing.

With distinct ethnic background and enrichedrace, Puerto Rico is a country with an ardent history. Rebellions and movements have all shaped what today is a Puerto Rican: a truly proud person of his/her origin. Being proudof my ethnic background I have been inspired to be ambitious towards learning and wanting to develop scientific investigations to enhance the quality of society living.
