CONMEBOL officially announced yesterday that the Superclásico between Boca Juniors and River Plate for the last-16 round of the Libertadores Cup will be played on May 7 and 14 at 9pm.
The Superclásico between Boca Juniors and River Plate will highlight the start of the knockout round of theLibertadores Cup.
The matches were finally confirmed yesterday by CONMEBOL for May 7 and 14, both of them at 9pm. The first leg will be at River’s Monumental stadium, while the series will conclude at La Bombonera.
There will also be two high-profile matchups between Brazilian clubs, but defending champion San Lorenzo will not have a chance to repeat its triumph from a year ago after an earlyelimination.
The group stage ended late Wednesday with four teams from Argentina and five from Brazil advancing to the round of 16. Two Colombian clubs also made it, as well as teams from Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Six-time champion Boca had the competition’s best campaign ever in the group stage, winning all six matches and outscoring opponents 19-2.
But while Boca cruised intothe knockout round, River barely made it. The two-time champion had the worst performance among all qualifiers, advancing thanks to a combination of results on the last day of play in its group. River had seven points from six matches, with only one victory.
The rivals will face each other in the Superclásico three times in a short period of time. In addition to the two-leg series in the cup,they will also meet in the Argentine league on May 3 at La Bombonera.
“It will be like three finals,” Boca left back Nicolás Colazo said. “We’ll have to give everything we have in every one of these matches.”
The last time the rivals met in an international tournament, River eliminated Boca in the semifinals of the 2014 South American Cup. River clinched the title.
The second-best performance inthe group stage belonged to Tigres of Mexico, which will face Bolivia’s Universitario de Sucre, the second-worst qualifier.
For the first time, there will be two matchups between Brazilian clubs in the round of 16. Internacional, which was in danger of being eliminated but made it through after beating The Strongest 1-0 at its Beira-Rio stadium on Wednesday, will play Atlético Mineiro, whichousted Colo-Colo of Chile with a 2-0 home win.
Three-time champion Sao Paulo escaped from the group stage with a 2-0 win over rival Corinthians at Morumbi stadium, a result that eliminated San Lorenzo. The defending champion finished five points behind second-place Sao Paulo after only two victories and a draw.
Sao Paulo will meet Brazilian league champion Cruzeiro, which also needed a last-roundwin to stay alive. Sao Paulo has been eliminated by a Brazilian team the last six times it has played the competition.
Corinthians, considered Brazil’s top team entering the Libertadores Cup, will play Guaraní of Paraguay. Corinthians has struggled recently with only one win in its last six matches in all competitions.
In the other matchups, Atlético Nacional of Colombia plays Emelec of Ecuador,Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia faces Argentina’s Estudiantes de La Plata and Racing Club of Argentina meets Montevideo Wanderers of Uruguay.
