A Long Way Gone is the true story of Ishmael Beah, who becomes a boy soldier during a civil war in Sierra Leone. When he was around 13-12 years old, Beah’s village was attacked while he was going toa rap performing group with his other friends. The confusion, violence, and uncertainty of the war, Ishmael, his brother, and couple of his friend were hunting in other village for food and shelter.Their day to day was very hard they didn’t have food to survival, and they had to commit acts that they never thought they will do it like stealing food from other children’s. By the time Ishmael isconscripted as a soldier by the army and he became the killing machine of horrible violence. The army became his family. The army brainwashed him into believing that every time he kill someone to takeit as an avenge his own family’s slaughter. He was an addicted to cocaine, marijuana, and “brown brown,” which give them force and power to fight for a good 5-7 hours. Ishmael continues to soldiersfiercely until his lieutenant turns the boy soldiers over to UNICEF. Ishmael was taken to a better place called “rehabilitation center” to help him forget about his past and focuses on the future. Thelove and the mercy he found at the center from a mature nurse named “Esther” opens an understanding and forgiveness within himself. He is welcome by his own family in “Freetown” and he is save becauseof his support and goodness. Ishmael was invited also with other kids that had been in the same situation to participate in New York to tell their story to the United Nation. He meat Laura Simms, astoryteller and his adoptive mom, and he see the importance of sharing his story because they can help other children’s. When he came back from Freetown, Sierra Leone, a coup by the (RUF) and themilitary ousts the civilian governments, and the war Ishmael has been avoiding catches up with him. After his uncle’s death, Ishmael run to Sierra Leona neighboring Guinea and finally does his own life...
