Biography
Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in Mvezo, a village of 300 inhabitants near Umtata in the Transkei. He belonged to the Madiba clan of the Xhosa ethnic group, was one of 13children, who had his father Henry Gadla Mphakanyiswa or (also called Henry Mgadla Mandela), with his four wives for a main advisor Thembu royal house, in turn was great-grandson of King (Ngubengcuka, whodied in 1832), his mother was Fanny Nosekeni Nonqaphi third of the wives of Henry Mphakanyiswa.1 Gadla
After finishing high school, he began studying at the University College of Fort Hare for hisBachelor of Arts. There he was elected to the Student Representative Council, was expelled along with a partner, for participating in a student strike. He moved to Johannesburg, where in 1941 he completedhis undergraduate studies at Unisa correspondence. He then studied law at the University of Witwatersrand, where he graduated in 1942 as abogado.2
He married three times, having six children. Fromhis first wife Evelyn Mase Ntoko, died on April 30, 2004 of pneumonia, three divorced in 1957 after 14 years of marriage. A daughter of this marriage died in infant age. Their first child died in 1969Thembekili Madiba in a car accident. On January 6, 2005 died the second son of Mandela and his first wife, Makgatho Mandela, at the age of 54 years in Johannesburg following an AIDS-related illness,was a lawyer and businessman, married twice and father of 4 children.
After 38 years of marriage to Winnie Madikizela, separated because of political scandals in April 1992 and finally divorced onMarch 19, 1996. With Winnie had two daughters, Zenani (Zeni), born on February 4, 1958, and Zindziswa (Zindzi), born in 1960.
On his 80th birthday, July 18, 1998, he married Graça Machel, widow ofSamora Machel, the former Mozambican president and ANC sponsor, who died in 1986 in a plane crash.
