Euthanasia Debate Speech
The current controversy of euthanasia or assisted suicide is one that has raised many questions as well as concerns. Many misleading claims concerning euthanasia have been staked. Pro-euthanasia individuals argue that people have the right to end their own lives, and that in many cases euthanasia offers a better alternative to dying a slow painful death. Some individualseven go as far as to say that euthanasia is a way to die with dignity. Such claims as these are morally irresponsible and ignorant. Society does not and never will bestow the right to decide whose lives are to be considered inferior and therefore worthy of elimination.
Today many people argue that the decision to kill oneself is a personal and private mater, one that society has no right to beconcerned with. However, this is said with the false assumption that everyone who makes the decision to commit suicide is doing so in a sane and rational matter. For the majority of people who commit suicide, the ultimate goal is not death. A recent study taken from the Journal of the American Medical Association states that, “ninety-five percent of the people who commit suicide, or request it, areclinically depressed. Further, only one in twenty of those peopl

e have had a consultation with a psychiatrist.” This shows that suicide does not occur after a thorough, rational decision is made that death is better than life. Suicide is simply a cry for help. The proper response of a civilized society would be to use both psychiatric and social service resources, to address the problemsthat led the would-be suicide to such an extreme measure.
For those who no not prefer death by starvation there are many other options. One pro-euthanasia organization distributes pamphlets on how to cause suffocation with a plastic bag. In Oregon where euthanasia is legal, it was said that “people would be allowed to die peacefully with pills.” Immediately after this was said, it was admittedthat other forms of death would be permitted, such as carbon monoxide poisoning. It was also suggested that if pills were in fact going to be used, a plastic bag should be used in addition to ensure death. Rules go on to say that if drugs are going to be used for death, family members should be warned that they may want to leave the room while the patient is euthanized since the death may be verydifficult to watch. These methods can hardly be considered peaceful, civilized, or dignified.
Euthanasia has been argued as a better alternative than dying a slow, painful death. However, today with modern medical technology, pain is manageable in almost all cases. Quality of life is considered to be just as imp
