RESUMEN
En el Valle Medio del Magdalena (VMM), los estratos con
edad Turoniano-Santoniano han sido denominados Formación
La Luna, dicha unidad tiene su sección tipo en la Serranía del
Perijá, Venezuela. Sin embargoen Colombia a partir de 1944
este nombre ha sido asignado a un grupo de rocas con
características físicas similares. En 1958 se establece el área
de El Tablazo, departamento de Santander, como la sección
tipo para la definición de los tres miembros que componen
esta unidad en el territorio colombiano, éstos son: Miembro
Salada, Miembro Pujamana y Miembro Galembo.
Después de aplicar nuevosconceptos de Sedimentología y
Estratigrafía Secuencial se observa que los estratos
encontrados en el VMM presentan variaciones importantes en
comparación con los reconocidos en Venezuela, además, se
tiene que la subdivisión de la unidad se realizó de manera
anómala lo cual ha generado un sin número de inconvenientes
en la comprensión y empleo de esta unidad tanto a nivel
científico comoeconómico, éste último teniendo en cuenta
que la Formación La Luna es la mayor roca fuente en los
sistemas petrolíferos del VMM.

ABSTRACT
In the Middle Magdalena Valley (MMV), the strata with
Turonian-Santonian age have been called La Luna Formation,
that unit has its type section in the Perijámountain range,
Venezuela. However in Colombia since 1944 this name has
been assigned to a group of rocks with similar physical
characteristics. In 1958 established the area of El Tablazo,
Santander department, as the type section for the definition of
the three members that make up this unit in Colombian
territory, these are: Salada Member, Pujamana Member and
Galembo Member.
After applying newconcepts of Sedimentology and Sequential
Stratigraphy noted that the strata found on the MMV show

significant changes compared with those recognized in
Venezuela, also has that the subdivision of the unit was maked
of anomalous way which has generated a countless
inconveniences in the understanding and use of this unit both
scientifically and economically, the latter taking into accountthat the La Luna Formation is the largest source rock in the
petroleum systems of MMV.

INTRODUCCION
La Formación La Luna fue originalmente llamada La Luna
Limestone por Garner (1926) y descrita formalmente como La
Luna Formation por Hedberg & Sass (1937) en la Quebrada
La Luna, Serranía del Perijá de lasiguiente manera: ‘‘It
[Formación La Luna] consists of thin-bedded and laminated
dense dark gray to black carbonaceous-bituminous limestone
and calcareous shale. The limestone beds vary from a few
inches to about a foot and one-half in thickness. The formation
is particularly characterized by hard black ellipsoidal and
discoidal limestone concretions ranging from a few inches to
several feetin diameter. Black Chert is common as seams and
nodules. The uppermost part of the formation is sometimes
lighter in color than is the bulk of the formation. When freshly
broken, the limestone frequently has a strong petroleum
