Although (or though) and Even though mean contrary to expectations.
e.g Although she is young, she has an open mind.
Eventhough I like most types of music, I don’t like jazz.
“Although” and “Even though” can go at the beginning or in the middle of sentences.
e.gAlthough it was very cold, they went for a walk in the park.
They went for a walk in the park although it was very cold.
She failed the test eventhough she went over all her notes.
Even though she went over all her notes, she failed the test.
“Though” can be placed in the middle of sentences toconjoin a second clause and sometimes when meaning the opposite sense, it can go at the end of sentences (or clauses).
Note: It almost never goesat the beginning of sentences, except informally.
e.g Frank spoke to the manager himself though he was told not to do
so.
Theprosecutor accused him of murder though there were no
witnesses.
I really believe in life after death; I don’t believe in God though.
Thewaiter took forever to serve our meals. The food was great,
though.
Note: Pay attention to how the intonation changes (falling intonation)when “though” is
used at the end of sentences, enhancing the contrary sense.
e.g He wants to buy a new car though he can’t affordit.
He wants to buy a new car. He can’t afford it, though.
Yesterday I saw Ed at the bank; I didn’t recognize him though.
