LA MANGA DEL MAR MENOR.
La Manga del Mar Menor is a coastal strip of 21 km long that extends from Cabo de Palos to the natural park of Las Salinas in San Javier. With a width between 100 and1,200 m. separates the two seas: Mediterranean from the Mar Menor and after urbanization in the second half of the twentieth century is a major tourist center in the Region of Murcia. It belongs to themunicipalities of Cartagena in the south and San Javier in the center.
During the Paleolithic were no changes in water levels in the Mar Menor and La Manga just had its basic structures. In theNeolithic although there was a rise in water levels allowed for colonization navigability Phoenician, Greek and Romans.
In 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, the Battle of Cape Palos, took place nearthe cape. The cape is part of a marine reserve, Reserva Marina de Cabo de Palos e Islas Hormigas.
Part of it is full of apartments, residential areas, luxury villas, hotels, restaurants, nightclubs,a very important Blue Flag Marina and a Casino. The last miles remain in natural state.
West of this tongue of land is the Mar Menor. This sea is like a lagoon connected by canals, called"gullets". Through them, water is exchanged with the Mediterranean Sea that lies to the east. The central ruff or El Estacio is an artificial extension and provides access to the marina.
The roadcommunication is performed by a single channel called Gran Via, which runs from Cabo de Palos to finish in the area of the weirs.
The sun rises in the Mediterranean and sets in the Mar Menor. This sunsetis the most beautiful one you can see in the world. There are a lot of beaches in both sides, Mediterranean and Mar Menor. This last one doesn´t have waves and it is warm, so it´s very apropiated forchildren and old people, and also for water sports and sailing.
There are sailing and skiing schools of windsurfing, catamarans, canoeing, and you can rent a water bike or a ship. Kite Surfing...
