War On the Home Front/ Allies Win The War

War on the Home Front
• By the time USA had joined joined the war in 1917, the war had been ongoing for 3 years.
• By that time Europe had lost moremen than any of the previous Wars in the last 3 centuries.
• The Great War as it became known affected everyone who lived at the time, soldiers and civilians alike.
Total War
• Governments soonchanged their strategy by announcing Total War.
• Total War= Countries devoted all resourced to the war effort.
• A wartime government would take control of the economy, and would tell factories whatto produce and how much.
• Numerous factories would be turned into ammunitions factories for the wartime effort.
• Nearly every bodied civilian helped take part in the war effort, mostly womenand young boys and girls.
• Unemployment soon disappeared under wartime economies.
Total War Effects
• One of the effects of the war was that goods were in such short supply, governments thereforeturned to rationing.
• Everything was ration from butter to shoe leather to chocolate because they were also needed for the war effort.
• Governments also censored many newspapers and radios aboutthe war, leaders feared honest reports would turn people against the war effort and government.
Woman and the War
• A total war meant that the government relied heavily upon the help from women.
•Hundreds of thousands of women replaced men in factories, offices and shops.
• Women built tanks and munitions, plowed fields, paved streets, ran hospitals. They also kept troops supplied with food,clothes and weapons.
• Most women after the war left the workforce, but had changed many opinions and views of what women were capable of doing.

Activity
• How did the government of the warningnations fight a total war?
Because countries devoted all their resources to the war effort. In many countries the entire force of government was dedicated to winning the conflict.
