Arequipa 
Is the capital city of the Arequipa in southern Peru? With a population of 836,859 it is the second most populous city of the country. Arequipa lies in the Andes Mountains, at an altitude of 2,335 meters (7,661 ft) above sea level; the former snow-capped volcano El Misty overlooks the city.
The city has many colonial-era Spanish buildings built of sillar, a pearly white volcanic rock,from which it gets the nickname La Ciudad Blanca ("The White City").[1] Reportedly, it first acquired this nickname in the colonial era, because most of its inhabitants werwere Creole of Iberian descent. The historic centre of Arequipa was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, in recognition of its architecture and historic integrity.
Soon after its founding, the city became a majorcommercial hub of southern Peru, accumulating commercial and administrative functions. In times of the Viceroyalty of Peru it was an important economic hub in southern Peru. It played a significant role in the history of the Republic of Peru, declaring itself "Capital of the Republic" during the government of Montero. Arequipa has also been home of many of the outstanding intellectual and politicalfigures, as well as religious icons, in the country. In recent decades it has become an important industrial and commercial center in Peru, now being the second most industrialized city in Peru.
It has several industrial parks, as the city has close trade ties witwith Chile, Bolivia and Brazil; it also has links with cities connected by the Southern and with the port of Matarani.
Histoire
Periodepré-coloniale
Les trouvailles archéologiques indiquent que la vallée fertile où se trouve Arequipa a été occupée entre 5000 et 6000 avant J.-C.
Au xve siècle, la région, alors occupée par les Amérindiens aymara, fut conquise par les Incas et servit de base importante de ravitaillement de produits agraires pour l'empire.
Période coloniale
La ville moderne fut fondée le 15 août 1540 par GarcíManuel de Carbajal, un émissaire du conquistador espagnol Francisco Pizarro. Un an plus tard, Charles V d'Espagne l'élève au rang de ville et lui confère les armes qu'elle conserve toujours aujourd'hui. L'arrivée de l'influence espagnole laissa de nombreuses reliques et l'architecture coloniale, ce qui rappelle au visiteur le passé colonial de cette ville, lorsqu'elle était la plus peuplée del'ensemble du territoire du Pérou.
Période républicaine
Après l'indépendance péruvienne de l'Espagne, entre 1833 et 1834, l'écrivaine française Flora Tristan visita Arequipa dans le but de rencontrer sa famille paternelle (Flora Tristan était la fille du diplomate péruvien Mariano Tristán y Moscoso). En 1838, elle publia à Paris les souvenirs de son voyage sous le titrePérégrinations d'une paria. Elledécrit dans ce livre la réalité aréquipénienne de cette époque.
