400 metres raceThe first lane of a certain 400 m track is in the shape of a rectangle of length 3r metres having two semi-circles each of radius r built on its width as shown in the figure below.In the following two questions, give your answers to three significant figures.
1. Given that the length of the first track lane is 400 m, find the value ofr.
2. Given that the width of the lane is 1.15 m, find the distance that should be provided at the start position between the racers of the first and second lanes in order to have afair race (that is, both players running 400 m)

You often see the above start positioningfor the 400 m race. The track is generally in the shape of a rectangle having two semi-circles each of radius r built on its width as shown in the figure below.

Thefirst lane drawn above has a total length of 400 m. Given that the radius of the semi-circles is about 35 m and the track has eight lanes of 1.20 m width each:
The eight racers shouldfinish at the same finishing line. Will they start beside each other?
3. In order to explain whether your answer above makes sense, find the approximate distance between the player inlane 1 and the player in lane 2 at the starting position.
