(American Nationalism) Economic Nationalism:


← Economic nationalism is a term used to describe policies which emphasizes domestic control of the economy, labor and capital formation, even ifthis requires the imposition of tariffs and other restrictions on the movement of labor, goods and capital.
← During the War of 1812, prices rose rapidly. The U.S. government had to pay highinterest on money it borrowed to pay for the war. In 1816 Congressman John C. Calhoun proposed a bill to create the Second Bank of the United States. Congress passed it that year.
← Revenue tariffs:tax on imports for the purpose of racing money.
← Protective tariffs: tax on import design to protect American manufacturers.


Judicial Nationalism:


← Between 1816 and 1824, ChiefJustice John Marshall helped bring the nation together. He ruled in three cases that established the U.S. government’s power over the states.
← In 1816 the Supreme Court decided the Martin v.Hunter’s Lessee case. It ruled that it could hear all appeals of state court decisions that involved federal laws and treaties.
← In 1819 the Court ruled on McCulloch v. Maryland. This case decidedthat the formation of the Second Bank of the United States was constitutional.
← In 1824 the Court decided Gibbons v. Ogden. The Court ruled that the Constitution gave the federal governmentcontrol over interstate commerce.


Nationalist Diplomacy:
