Engineers Canada is the national organization ofthe 12 provincial and territorial associations and ordre that regulate the practice of engineering and license the more than 160,000 professional engineers. Established in 1936, Engineers Canada serves the associations and ordre, which are its constituent and sole members, through the delivery of national programs which ensure the highest standards of engineering education, professionalqualifications and ethical conduct. Engineers Canada is the voice of its constituent members in national and international affairs, and promotes greater understanding of the nature, role and contribution of engineering to society. Fondé en 1936,Ingénieurs Canada est au service de ces ordres professionnels, qui sont ses membres constituants exclusifs; il leur offre des programmes nationaux qui visent à assurer le respect des normes les plus rigoureuses en ce qui concerne la formation en génie, les compétences professionnelles et l’exercice de la profession. Ingénieurs Canada est aussi le porte-parole de ses membres constituants en matièred’affaires nationales et internationales et il favorise une meilleure compréhension de la nature, du rôle et de l’apport de la profession d’ingénieur dans la société. The Canadian Engineering AccreditationBoard and Engineers Canada gratefully acknowledge the individuals who have freely volunteered their time and expertise while serving the Accreditation Board on visiting teams and/or committees. I would like to thank the members of the Accreditation Board and, in particular, the Executive Committee and Policies and Procedures Committee, who were instrumental in the recent updating of accreditationcriteria. Since 2005, work has been underway by the Accreditation Board to update their criteria, precipitated by a number of factors including a concern that the then current criteria may be too prescriptive, may not encourage or require continuous improvement, and did not emphasize outcomes. The updated criteria were approved in May 2008. The process used to update the criteria was conducted inthe spirit of collaboration with all stakeholders, including the constituent members and the National Council of Deans of Engineering and Applied Science. We also extend our thanks to past chairs of the Board, who contributed materially throughout the updating process.
