Rocinha

a) Rocinha is the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and is located in Rio's South Zone between the districts of São Conrado and Gávea. Rocinha is built on a steephillside overlooking Rio de Janeiro, and is situated about one kilometre from a nearby beach. Most of the favela is on a very steep hill, with many trees surrounding it. 69,356 people live in Rocinha, making it the most populous favela in Brazil, the second in Latin America and the ninth in the world. Almost all the houses are made of brick and concrete. Some buildings are three and four stories talland almost all houses have basic sanitation, plumbing, and electricity. Compared to simple shanty towns or slums, Rocinha has a better developed infrastructure and hundreds of businesses such as banks, medicine stores, bus lines, cable television, including locally based channel TV Rocinha, and, at one time, a McDonalds franchise. These factors help classify Rocinha as a favela barrio, or favelaneighborhood.

Yes, for example in November 2011, a security operation was executed where hundreds ofpolice and military patrolled the streets of Rocinha to crackdown on rampant drug dealers and bring government control to the neighborhood.

* I don’t have a lot of money to live in a city as most of the population. But in this favela you don’t live bad because you have a lot ofthings, such as bus lines, which most of the favelas don’t have.
* With how many people do you live?
* I live with my husband, my four daughters and another family of four people in a house of 24 meters square.
* Finally, would you like to live here in the future?
* I hope not because is difficult to assume that you live in a place where the authorities want to destroy it.
d) DearSir,
I am writing in connection of the actual life conditions in the favela of Rocinha. Although it has some good aspects, there are a number of points I am disappointed with.
First of all, I would disagree with the point that traficants live there because it’s illegal and also because then it means that a lot of people of there consume drugs. I would suggest to giving them an employ becausethen they won’t have to live of selling drugs.
Another point is the teenage pregnancy. This is because the men start to flirt with the teenagers with 12 years. I would suggest to control more these topic because it can transmit illnesses, such as AIDS.
In conclusion, I hope my suggestions will help to improve the favela of Rocinha.

a) Kiberia Kenya is a division of Nairobi Area, Kenya, it is at 5 kilometres from the city centre, Nairobi. Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi, and the second largest urban slum in Africa. There are approximately 2.5 million slum dwellers in about 200 settlements in Nairobi representing 60% of the Nairobi population, occupying just 60% of the land. Kibera houses almost 1 Million of thesepeople.

b) All the people are African. The original settlers were the Nubian people, they now occupy about 15% of Kibera, mostly are Muslim and are also mostly shack owners. The other shack owners are mostly Kikuyu (the majority tribe in Nairobi), although in most cases they do not live there but are absentee landlords.
