HOSTS SETUP

1: Turn off all internet access.

2: You need to find your existing hosts file so navigate to here (hidden files and folders need to be shown);

Windows 7/Vista/XP =C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC

3: In the ETC folder is a file called hosts, open this file with notepad (double click then open withnotepad), in notepad the file will look like this;

4: If you have any information after the;
# ::1 localhost
Then copy all of this information and paste it to a new textdocument and save it to your desktop.

5: Close the hosts file that you opened with notepad and then rename it to hostsbackup.

6: If you can’t rename the file then you have permission errors so checkthe following;

A, Check file is not read only (right click hosts & tick the read/write box).
B, Right click the hosts file and select properties, security, edit, your user,
take full controlby ticking the full control box, click apply.
In XP to see the security tab do this;
1, Launch Windows Explorer or My Computer.
2, Click on the Tools at the menu bar, then click onFolder Options.
3, Click on View tab.
4, In the Advanced Settings section at the bottom of the list, clear the tick
On the use simple file sharing check box.
5, Click OK.
C, 64bitusers start internet explorer or my computer and type;
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
into the address bar and the hosts will appear.
D, Many firewalls and antivirus software prevent thehosts from being edited or even
change it back again after you have edited it so if you still can’t save the hosts
after all the above steps then restart in safe mode and change it there.
E,Windows 7 users getting error;
Access to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ hosts was denied
or
Cannot create the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file.
