Dear parents,


When we cover human genetics in biology, we study the ABO blood types as an example of Codominance and Multiple Alleles. Most students are interested infinding out their own blood, and for the last 20 years (15 in Baldwin), I have included this exercise in our laboratory experiments. This simple test is extremely accurate. Students not only find outtheir blood type; they also learn about antibodies and safe laboratory practices.

Although most of you are aware of the techniques used to draw a drop of blood from a fingertip, and know it is anabsolutely safe method, I feel more comfortable describing it step by step. Please read carefully

• The small lancets used to prick the fingertip are individually wrapped and used once, and onlyonce. ( They are discarded after every use) (Those used in blood sugar tests by diabetic patients)

• Fingers are wiped with alcohol before and after each test.

• 3 small drops of bloodare individually placed on glass slides, mixed with the antibodies and observed.

• Results are recorded as either A, B, AB or O ( + or -)

• Glass slides are discarded properly in abiohazard bag and disposed of safely.

• This is a Voluntary activity and students may change their minds at any time.

• I (Mrs. Muniz) will be in charge of pricking the fingertip. (no studentwill be allowed to do this)

• I will not accept texts or phone calls in place of written permission If students do not have permission from a parent or guardian, they will not be allowed tocheck their own blood type. (They will record somebody’s data)
