CONOCIMIENTOS QUE TIENEN LOS ESTUDIANTES DE UNA UNIVERSIDAD PÚBLICA DE MANIZALES SOBRE EL PAPILLOMAVIRUS HUMANO*

Objetivo: identificar el nivel de conocimiento que tienen los estudiantes de una universidad pública de Manizales acerca del Papillomavirus Humano (HPV).Materiales y métodos: este es un estudio descriptivo, de corte transversal, el universo fue de 1.935 estudiantes matriculados en el período 2009-II, se tomó una muestra aleatoria estratificada de 536 estudiantes de ambos géneros, de todos los programas académicos de pregrado, que estuvieran en primer semestre y llevaran entre 70 y 84 créditos cursados. Se aplicó una encuesta para determinar lascaracterísticas sociodemográficas y los conocimientos acerca del HPV. Resultados: de los encuestados el 25% tienen un nivel alto de conocimiento, el 32% un nivel medio, el 23% un nivel bajo y el 20% no sabe. Luego del análisis, se puede percibir que las características sociodemográficas tomadas en cuenta tienen relación con el nivel de conocimiento que tienen los estudiantes. Es importante resaltar elmarcado desconocimiento en aspectos como el tipo de lesiones que causa el virus (70,5%), y en quienes se presenta comúnmente (69%), cuáles son los factores de riesgo para contraer la infección (72,6%), el diagnóstico (63,2%) y cómo se previene (54%). Conclusiones: el desconocimiento sobre el HPV es alto en la población encuestada, es posible considerar esto como uno de los principales factores deriesgo para adquirir HPV; por tanto, se hace necesario empezar a implementar programas específicos de educación para la salud sexual dentro de la Universidad. KNOWLEDGE STUDENTS FROM A PUBLIC UNIVERSITY IN MANIZALES HAVE ABOUT THE HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS
Objective: to identify the level of knowledge that the students of a public university in Manizales have about Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Methodology and methods: this is a descriptive, cross-cutting method study carried out witha population of 1,935 students registered at Universidad de Caldas during the 2009-II academic period. One stratified random sample of 536 students from both gender all belonging to academic undergraduate programs who were in the first semester with 70 to 84 credit hours already accredited, was taken. A survey was applied to determine the social-demographic characteristics and the knowledge aboutHPV. Results: 25% of the surveyed students who participated in the survey have a high level of knowledge about HPV, 32% have a mid level of knowledge, 23% have a low level of knowledge, and 20% don`t have any knowledge about HPV. After the analysis it can be observed that the social-demographic characteristics taken into account are related with the level of knowledge the students have. It isimportant to highlight the deep lack of knowledge in areas such as the types of lesions the virus causes (70.5%), the patients in whom these lesions are commonly present (69%), which the risk factors to get infected are (72.6%), the diagnosis (63.2%), and how to prevent it (54%). Conclusions: the lack of knowledge about HPV is high among the surveyed population which can be considered as one of themain risk factors to get infected with HPV. As a consequence, it is necessary to start implementing specific sex health education programs at the University.
