Sociolinguistics is concerned with language in its social context within the speech community. As such, it involves both the sociolinguistics of language and thesociolinguistics of society. How language is used in discourse is affected by the speech situation and its components. Any given discourse can be analyzed and its overall structure identified. Thesestructures can provide clues to the function of linguistic behavior. Language is an important tool in the expression of solidarity and power between individuals. Sociolinguistics norms for language use canalso give indications of how power is distributed in society in general. The relationship between language and society is clearly shown by the existence of standard and nonstandard language varieties.Whether or not a language or structure is considered standard is depend on attitudes of speakers and not on any inherent notion of correctness.
