Language in social context
Sociolinguistics is concerned with language in its social context within the speech community. As such, it involves both the sociolinguistics of language and thesociolinguistics of society. How language is used in discourse is affected by the speech situation and its components. Any given discourse can be analyzed and its overall structure identified. Thesestructures can provide clues to the function of linguistic behavior. Language is an important tool in the expression of solidarity and power between individuals. Sociolinguistics norms for language use canalso give indications of how power is distributed in society in general. The relationship between language and society is clearly shown by the existence of standard and nonstandard language varieties.Whether or not a language or structure is considered standard is depend on attitudes of speakers and not on any inherent notion of correctness. The designation of official language and language planning are political ways for either reducing the disadvantages experienced by speakers ofnonstandard varieties or promoting standers standard varieties in the interest of increasing the power of their speakers. Speakers can also vary between varieties for political reasons.
A lingua francacan be used to communicate between groups in societies where many languages are spoken.
Pidgin or Creole language may arise where communication is limited. In groups where speakers are multilingual,speakers may code switch between languages for a number of reason. At the very least, a language contact situation usually results in the borrowing iof words between linguistics groups.
