My big fat Greek Wedding” is a romantic comedy directed by Ioel Zwick about Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos who also wrote thescreenplay) and her will to decide her own way of life regardless her background and gender.

Toula is a thirty years old Greek woman living and working with her parents and brother in her family’srestaurant, Dancing Zorba´s, in a Chicago Greek community. All her father Gus wants for her is to get married to a Greek boy, but she is looking for more in life. With her mother’s help she convinces herfather to let her take some computer classes at college and with those classes she takes over her aunt’s travel agency. Soon after Toula meets Ian Miller, a “not-at-all-Greek” school teacher and she fellin love with him. They date secretly for a while before her family finds out and when this happens, her father can not avoid being annoyed and confused about her dating a non-Greek man. At that pointthe most enjoyable part of the film starts with the hilarious succession of sequences of Toula´s father trying to get her way and stop that relationship and Ian Miller trying to being accepted by herfamily (from the beginning he understands Toula cannot be happy away from her people). Finally the unsurprising end is fulfilled with the announced weeding of the movie’s title where everybody acceptseverybody.
The actors all play their roles well. Nia Vardalos is a completely convincing Toula, John Corbett approaches the part of Ian with grace and charm. Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan arebelievable although stereotyped at their roles of the reluctant father and supportive mother.
The movie is consistently funny and touching at some points and although the plot is highly predictableit does not interfere the joy of watching it due to the rare optimistic mood that it is able to create.
It is a recommendable film for a Sunday afternoon, there is a lot of sweetness and not much...
