Biography
Gunpei Yokoi
Gunpei Yokoi was born on September 10, 1941 and grew up in Kyoto into a wealthy family, his father was the director ofa pharmaceutical company. He was first hired by Nintendo in 1965 to maintain the assembly-line machines. In 1981, Yamauchi (president of Nintendo at thetime) appointed Yokoi to supervise videogames and videogames creator in 1974.
He graduated from Doshisha University with a degree in electronics.Traveling on a bullet train, Yokoi saw a bored businessman playing with an LCD calculator. Yokoi then got the idea for a watch that doubled as a miniaturegame machine for killing time, and went on to create Game & Watch.
After Mario Bros., Yokoi produced several R&D1 games such as KidIcarus and Metroid. He also designed ROB and the Game Boy. Yokoi left Nintendo on August 15, 1996. Leaving with several of his subordinates to form a newcompany called Koto. In 2003, Yokoi posthumously received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Game Developers Association. GameTrailers placed him on their lists for the "Top Ten Game Creators".
On October 4, 1997, while driving on the Hokuriku Expressway, Yokoi crashed a truck driven byTakashi Okushima. After the two men had left the car to inspect the damage, Yokoi was hit and fatally injured by a passing car. The driver of thepassenger car that hit Yokoi in the second accident was Gen Tsushima, a member of the tourism industry. Yokoi was pronounced dead two hours later
