In this essay I describe the differences between Access and Excel. They are both related to each other but completely different and it use is based on tasks.
A relational database is a collectionof data items organized as a set of formally-described tables from which data can be accessed or reassembled in many different ways without having to reorganize the database tables. The relationaldatabase was invented by E. F. Codd at IBM in 1970.
It's an organized collection of data. A database management system, such as Access, FileMaker Pro, Oracle or SQL Server provides you with thesoftware tools you need to organize that data in a flexible manner. It includes facilities to add, modify or delete data from the database, ask questions or queries about the data stored in the databaseand produce reports summarizing selected contents. The standard user and application program interface to a relational database is the structured query language or SQL.
SQL statements are used bothfor interactive queries for information from a relational database and for gathering data for reports. In it's most basic form, a database program must be able to add, delete and edit records in thetables which make up the database and also to search for specific records in the tables by using different search criteria. Also, in most cases, user authentication is required.
There are manyterms use on MS Access but the ones we most commonly use are terms Record, Field, Data Type. On Data type the Jet data type include the following;
Text, Memo , Number, Autocorrect and Auto number.Also we use queries, a query is an instruction to retrieve information that is in a set of rows. You can use a query to retrieve information from a single table or from multiple tables based onspecific criteria. You can also use a query to modify the information that you retrieve. In Access, you can categorize queries as follows: Select query, Parameter query, Action query, Crosstab query etc....
