GENERAL LINGUISTICS

Language is a complex system because it has acomplete structure, and the way it is used in society varies according to many factors. In English language is not enough to know how it is structured (knowing the rules), it is also necessary to knowhow to use it in real communication. Language is a social phenomenon because it is an innate capacity of human being and serves to communicate to each others. This communication and the way englishlanguage is used in society is studied by sociolinguistic. In specific terms, sociolinguistics tries to explain all the phenomenons from spoken english language in real communication processes.

Thereare some differences in the spoken language that make the sociolinguistics study interesting. These differences can appear in countries, regions, groups or individual persons in which the language isused. Also, the age has an important role in some ways the language is spoken. So, in spoken language there exists a particular way of individual speaking. Each person has a unique way of speaking,that is, special styles that differentiate from other persons. These differences among individual persons are named idiolects. Another phenomenon reflects from the spoken language is the different wayof speaking with special characteristics between groups. This fact is referred to the dialect. In others words, dialect is the variation adopted in specific regions or groups that share among themspecial codes (idioms, slang) with any interruption in communication.

These different characteristics of language spoken are related most of the time for the separations among groups. Thisseparation can be geographically, by isolation of groups or age.
