Lyndon Johnson assumed the presidency three decades after the social welfare initiatives of the New Deal. In the intervening years, World War II and the Cold War had becomefederal priorities, and those living in poverty (19 percent of the population) and especially racial minorities still suffered from discrimination that in many cases was condoned by local law and localofficials.
The great society was a domestic program that was intended to end poverty, racial discrimination, create more schools and education, better medical care, and help the economy. Among its moresuccessful programs was the Job Corps to help unemployed inner city young people find work, Project Head Start for disadvantaged pre-schoolers, Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), a domesticversion of the Peace Corps, and the Community Action Program, which helped direct aid to poor neighborhoods. Some things from his program are still in use today like Medicare and Medicaid; others werevery helpful to minorities like the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and education opportunities.
Now these days American society still wonders if the Great Society program was a success or a failure. inmy opinion I think any program implemented by the government will always have its pros and cons. many things I mentioned above are still in use and have benefited our nation, and the most importantfor me is the end of racial discrimination, but there are some things that were created to help people and ended up being a total failure like the welfare plan that in my opinion should be re-planedor must be replaced with a similar plan which only helps people who actually need it or have a disability, because as we all know many people have found the way to abuse this system.
