Taking a business from ordinary to extraordinary takes a certain type of person that can lead the company in the right direction to do the rightthings; not just managing to do things right. This is a person who is always creatively thinking outside the box and has great ideas based upon their strengths and not just titles. It’s alsobelieved, as Tom Peter’s states, “that the best leaders don’t create followers; they create more leaders” (Benincasa 1). Personally, leadership is something you learn by first-hand experience and somethingyou continue to grow on through the years, not just by reading about it. They’re are many leadership styles out there, but I will try distinguish between the big three and provide a real life example ofhow one man flipped an entire company from rags to riches.
The first type of leadership is the authoritative style, which can be summed up in the phrase, “Come with me.” This is meant for a commonvision, and is best used in the entrepreneurial spirit of accomplishing a task. By doing this, they are providing a clear expectation for what needs to be done, when it should be done, and how itshould be done. The second type of style is the democratic leader who builds consensus through participation and often asks, “What do you think?” It’s found to be the most effective style, because theyask guidance from others by allowing input from the community making everyone feel engaged. The final is the delegative leadership style which offers little to no guidance to groups members and leavesall decisions up to other group members. “This style can be effective in situations where group members are highly qualified in an area of expertise, it often leads to poorly defined roles and a lackof motivation.” (Lewin 8)
